Look at the layout as well as the count

Check the direction of the burners and the grate areas their controls actually influence. Two models with the same burner count can have different layouts. A side burner does not automatically increase the indirect capacity beneath the main lid. A specialized high-output searing burner is also a different feature from another general-purpose cooking zone.

Picture one real cook: a substantial cut over an unlit area and vegetables over an active zone. Does everything fit without inappropriate dripping or insufficient lid clearance? That answer is more informative than maximum total output. A large power figure says little about how precisely a small area can be managed during an ordinary dinner.

Use extra zones for a defined purpose

Depending on the design, two independently controlled burner areas may provide one direct and one indirect side. Three or more can permit other arrangements, such as an unlit center heated from the sides. These are examples, not operating directions for every appliance. The permitted configuration and accessory positions belong to the specific manual.

Additional capacity is useful when you regularly need separate cooking tasks at the same time. For a few portions, more burners can simply mean more cleaning and maintenance points. A large grill need not operate every burner for every meal, but its full safe footprint and storage requirements still occupy space. Measure it with shelves open and required clearances included.

Check controls and service access

Controls should be clearly labeled and easy to reach. On a cold unit, inspect how grease collectors come out and whether replacement parts are identifiable for the exact model. Do not modify burner openings or substitute incompatible gas components to alter performance. Irregular flames and damaged parts require the maker's procedure or qualified attention.

Choose the count by asking which two or three tasks you genuinely intend to run together. If there is no clear answer, another burner may be only theoretical spare capacity. A straightforward layout that you keep clean and operate safely is more useful than a large collection of specialized zones that rarely contribute to your meals.

Use grilling equipment only in its intended location and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Timing is not a substitute for checking doneness.
