Learn where the drippings go

Check the manual to see how liquid leaves the cookbox. Some grills have a large sliding pan that directs grease into a smaller disposable tray; others use a different arrangement. Those pieces are not interchangeable simply because a replacement container fits under the grate. A tray in the wrong position may let grease run onto components that were never designed to collect it.

Inspect the system before every use and more frequently when cooking fatty foods. Cleaning frequency depends on the amount and type of cooking, not just a date on the calendar. A quick vegetable meal may leave little residue, while several rounds of meat can fill the collection tray much faster. Do not wait until the pan is difficult to remove or liquid is already reaching its rim.

Empty only when safe to handle

Shut down the grill as instructed and wait until the tray can be handled safely. Hot grease can cause severe burns; trying to pull out a full pan during cooking is not a sensible way to make room. Prepare a suitable collection container and a washable work surface. Keep the tray level as you remove it because a solid-looking top layer may conceal liquid underneath.

Dispose of grease according to local waste rules, never down a sink, toilet or storm drain. Clean reusable components with approved products and dry them afterward. Disposable liners need the correct shape, size and support. Several improvised layers of foil can interfere with the drain or separate unexpectedly when lifted, making a simple maintenance task much harder to control.

Do not patch a failed tray casually

The manufacturer determines whether a pan may be lined. Foil that blocks a drain or projects against a hot component changes how the system operates. A damaged or rusted-through tray needs a suitable replacement. A loose container placed beneath it is not a reliable repair, particularly if that container obstructs airflow or interferes with another part of the appliance.

Wipe accessible rails and edges before refitting the tray so it seats correctly. After the next cook, confirm that drippings reached the intended collection point. If unusual amounts of grease remain in the cookbox, the answer may not be a stronger cleaner: an outlet could be blocked or a component incorrectly positioned. Leave the grill off until the cause has been checked against its instructions, rather than letting repeated heating disguise a problem with the grease path.

Use grilling equipment only in its intended location and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Timing is not a substitute for checking doneness.
