Match the cut to the load
Choose pieces large enough to stay above the holes and similar enough in cooking requirements to finish together. Thick carrot rounds and slender pepper strips are not ideal as one starting load. Precook denser ingredients or give them a head start when the recipe and setup support it. The shapes should also be easy to move with suitable tongs or a turner.
Dry washed vegetables and coat lightly with oil and appropriate seasoning. Wet marinade collecting underneath encourages steaming before browning. Keep the layer fairly shallow and cook larger quantities in batches. A mound rising above the rim is harder to turn safely and difficult to assess evenly, regardless of the basket's advertised capacity.
Handle the basket as hot cookware
Install and preheat it only as its instructions permit. Detachable handles may have different heat limits from the metal basket itself. Check that the lid closes and that enough room remains for safe handling. The basket must not obstruct essential airflow or grease drainage in the grill, particularly when used beside other accessories.
Turn the pieces at useful intervals to bring new surfaces against the hot base. Continuous stirring interrupts that contact and can crush softer vegetables. If browning is uneven, repositioning the basket may help when it can be done safely with appropriate heat protection. Do not shake a heavy hot basket over people or an unprotected surface.
Finish the flavor after the heat
Check several pieces for the desired tenderness, especially the densest ingredients. Fresh herbs, lemon juice or a little vinegar often work best afterward, preserving their flavor and avoiding burned leaf fragments. Browned patches contribute flavor without requiring every edge to become black. Stop when the vegetables have the texture you want rather than pursuing uniform dark color.
Set the hot basket on a suitable heatproof support and transfer the vegetables with clean utensils. A tablecloth or thin plastic board is not a safe resting place. If the same basket has held raw meat, clean it thoroughly before vegetarian or ready-to-eat use. The perforations improve heat contact but do not replace ordinary food hygiene.
Use grilling equipment only in its intended location and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Timing is not a substitute for checking doneness.
