Start while everything is cold
Remove the cover and check the ground beneath the appliance. Wheels, legs and supports need a stable base; a patio slab that shifted over winter can leave the cooker tilted. Look for significant corrosion and missing hardware without forcefully testing a potentially weakened support. An unstable appliance should not be made temporarily usable with a random wooden wedge just because guests are arriving later.
Open the cookbox and look for moisture, old food residue, nests and foreign objects. Remove deposits using suitable tools. Take out grates and heat shields only as the instructions allow, then inspect the grease tray and the route leading to it. A tidy exterior does not show whether the internal collection system is blocked or a removable component has been fitted in the wrong position.
Inspect supplies and working tools
For gas equipment, inspect hoses, regulators and connections as the manufacturer specifies. Damaged parts need appropriate replacement or professional assessment; tape is not a gas-hose repair. If connections were disconnected, or the manual calls for a seasonal check, carry out its leak-testing procedure with an approved product. Never use an open flame to search for escaping gas.
Check an electric grill's cord and plug while unplugged. Damage, wet connections or unusual discoloration are reasons not to switch it on. Include tongs, thermometers, gloves and work surfaces in the inspection. A functioning thermometer and dry, intact heat-resistant gloves are more useful than extra accessories still in their packaging. Replace worn cleaning tools before using them on the cooking grate.
Make the first operation deliberate
Remove cleaning residue and refit all components correctly. Start the appliance with its normal lighting procedure, not with an extended gas release or improvised ignition aid. Observe whether the controls and heat behavior appear normal. Gas odor, unusual flames or burners that repeatedly go out should not be ignored through repeated lighting attempts. Shut down and establish the cause before putting food on.
Keep the first meal manageable. A straightforward dish leaves more attention available for a cooker that has not been used recently. Note anything that needs replacing or replenishing, and keep the manual somewhere accessible. A pre-season check is most helpful when completed before the grocery trip, rather than at the moment raw meat is already sitting on the work surface and there is pressure to make the equipment operate immediately.
Use grilling equipment only in its intended location and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Timing is not a substitute for checking doneness.
